Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Can you defer a scholarship for a gap year?
You may be able to defer a scholarship for a gap year, but only if the provider permits it. Deferring college admission does not automatically defer the associated scholarship.
What to know before you act
Ask before accepting a gap-year plan or missing an enrollment deadline. Some awards are tied to a specific entering class, school, or funding period. Others may allow a written deferral with conditions about employment, coursework, or enrollment elsewhere.
Request confirmation of the future amount, renewal terms, start term, and any steps required to reactivate the award. If deferral is unavailable, ask whether you can apply again. Include the possible loss of aid when comparing the financial impact of your gap year.
Your next steps
- Contact admissions and the scholarship administrator separately.
- Describe the intended gap-year dates and activities.
- Save written approval and a reminder for reactivation deadlines.
For the next step, use the compare financial aid offers. Use a worked example and worksheet to compare net price, loans, and renewal conditions.
