Set goals and plan ahead.

Jan 14,2016

Since returning to school, I have taken the time to speak to many students, trying to get a feel for how focused and prepared they are for after school. What I have found is that most students have no plan beyond graduation. Most do not even know what they are doing the next semester, let alone in a few years.

As someone who has lived in the world beyond the family circle, I must recommend that my fellow students begin to look beyond the now and set plans for down the road. I have a few reasons to give this advice. As someone who had no plans and could not afford school, I spent some time on the streets. As someone who now can afford an education because I donated a little over eight years of my life to military service. As someone who played around and enjoyed life until I was 38, who wasted most of his life on the moment and not the moments to come. Cannot stress the need more than ever to have a plan of action in place and with it a time-table for targeted things to accomplish.

Focus on how you can take your degree and succeed beyond school. Apply for internships. Look at companies you really want to work at after school and see if they have internships available. Look into federal work and see what internships and post-graduate fellowships you can get into. Set yourself up for success and a career you will enjoy. Start planning for your retirement now.

By not planning you will become like so many other graduates who complete school and then have no direction in life. End up with student loan debt that cost more than two houses and still no sustainable employment.

I cannot reiterate how important it is to have a plan and with that plan, definitive goals in place to succeed.

best of luck in school, and please listen to the words of this older student (40 yrs old) who has lived outside of the family circle of support and protection and knows how important a plan is. Begin now while you are in school planning. Do not wait until it is too late and you are out of school.

There are so many opportunities you just have to look and find them. Start with the home page of the location you desire to work at in the future and type in "Internship" just for starters. Take a moment and change your future.
