Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Can transfer students graduate with Latin honors?

Transfer students can graduate with Latin honors at some institutions, but eligibility depends on the receiving school’s rules. Minimum institutional credits and the treatment of transfer grades are especially important.

Check the requirements before your final term

Transferred credits may count toward your degree without entering the GPA used for honors. A school can also require a minimum amount of graded coursework completed there. Do not assume that acceptance of transfer credit satisfies every honors requirement.

Ask whether admission to an honors program is separate from eligibility for Latin honors. If a thesis or capstone is required, determine whether you can complete it within your remaining semesters. A transfer plan should account for both academic feasibility and time to graduation.

Put the answer into practice

  • Identify the institutional-credit minimum for Latin honors.
  • Confirm which grades enter the honors GPA.
  • Check thesis, project, or departmental conditions.
  • Request a degree review early enough to adjust your plan.

A useful question is: “With my accepted transfer credits and remaining course plan, which graduation honors requirements still apply?” Use the transfer-student Latin honors guide to organize the conversation.
