Honor Society® Expert FAQ
What GPA is required for cum laude?
The GPA required for cum laude depends on your institution, college, and degree rules. There is no national cutoff. Use the official policy for your program and graduation cohort rather than a generic GPA range.
Find the number the institution actually uses
A policy may use cumulative institutional GPA, a subset of upper-division courses, or a percentile within the graduating class. It may also require a minimum number of credits completed at the awarding institution. Meeting a published GPA alone does not override another condition.
If you are near a threshold, check whether the school rounds, truncates, or compares the full calculated GPA. A number displayed with fewer decimal places is not permission to round eligibility upward yourself.
Put the answer into practice
- Find the official cum laude rule for your academic division.
- Identify the included courses and required credits.
- Check the treatment of final grades and repeated courses.
- Ask the registrar to clarify any calculation question.
A useful request is: “Which GPA is used for my Latin honors calculation, and when is it finalized?” Keep the response with your graduation records. Avoid claiming a projected honor as already awarded.
