Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Do college interviews matter?
College interviews can provide information for admissions, help you learn about the college, or both. Their role depends on the institution, program, and interview format.
Understand whether the conversation is evaluative
Check whether the interview is required, optional, or available only when interviewers can accommodate applicants. Lack of an available interview should not be interpreted without the college’s policy. An interview is rarely a reason to neglect the written application or academic record.
Prepare to explain your interests and experiences in your own words. Ask questions that help you evaluate the college, and distinguish an alumnus’s personal experience from current institutional policy. Confirm financial-aid, academic, and admission requirements with the office responsible for them.
Your next steps
- Read the interview instructions and format.
- Prepare specific examples and thoughtful questions.
- Confirm logistics and send a brief thank-you afterward.
