Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you write a cover letter for your first job?
Write a first-job cover letter by explaining why the role interests you and how two or three specific experiences prepare you for its work. Keep it focused, factual, and consistent with your résumé.
Explain the connection your résumé leaves implicit
Open with the role and a concrete reason for your interest. Use the middle to connect a project, job, or activity to an important requirement. For example, describe how coordinating volunteers prepared you to manage schedules, rather than saying you are passionate about teamwork without evidence.
Close with a brief expression of interest in discussing the role. Follow length and submission instructions; do not send an unnecessary letter when the employer explicitly declines one. If you use AI to revise wording, verify every claim and preserve your voice. A generated claim about the employer is still your responsibility to check.
Your next steps
- Identify the role’s most important requirements.
- Choose truthful examples that add context to your résumé.
- Proof the employer name, role title, claims, and final file.
