Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How do you write a financial aid appeal letter?

A financial-aid appeal letter should identify the student, state the reason for review, explain the financial change, and list supporting documents. Be specific about the decision you want reconsidered.

What to know before you act

Adaptable template: “I am requesting a review of my aid offer for [term]. Since [date], [documented change] has affected our ability to pay. The FAFSA information reflects [earlier circumstances]. I have attached [records]. Please let me know which review process applies and whether additional information is needed.”

Send sensitive records through the school’s approved secure method. A short factual explanation is stronger than an unsupported demand or an invented competing offer. Check whether the school requires a form in addition to the letter.

Your next steps

  • Include your name, student identifier, and attendance term.
  • Quantify the change accurately using available records.
  • Request confirmation and the expected decision timeline.

For the next step, use the compare financial aid offers. Use a worked example and worksheet to compare net price, loans, and renewal conditions.
