Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How should academic awards appear on the Common App?
Report academic honors in the Common App section designated for them, following the current form’s instructions. Use the official award name, relevant grade level, and accurate level of recognition rather than adding unsupported prestige.
Make each short entry understandable
Choose distinctions that show meaningful academic achievement and can be verified. A school award belongs at the school level even if the sponsoring organization operates nationally. Participation in an activity is not automatically an award.
Prioritize entries by relevance and significance to your record, not just by the longest title. If an unfamiliar name needs context, use the available space to clarify the subject or selection basis. Avoid repeating an identical achievement without adding useful information elsewhere in the application.
Put the answer into practice
- Gather the award notification and official wording.
- Read the live form’s limits before editing entries.
- Use accurate grade and recognition-level fields.
- Preview the application to check truncation and consistency.
If you have no academic honors to report, answer honestly and develop your activities, responsibilities, and essays in the appropriate sections. The guide for applicants without academic honors offers a practical evidence review.
