Honor Society® Expert FAQ

What do students actually do in an honor society?

What students do in an honor society depends on the organization. Activities may include service, learning, mentoring, networking, scholarship applications, or chapter responsibilities. Some organizations have required participation, while others let people choose how to engage. Check the actual model before joining.

Choose participation you can explain

An affiliation is most meaningful when you understand its purpose and use it intentionally. Select an activity connected to your goals instead of assuming membership itself creates experience. If you take on a role, clarify the responsibility, the time involved, and what support is available.

Honor Society® operates independently of campus chapters. Its prospective-member guidance describes voluntary participation rather than a required schedule of chapter meetings. Relevant actions can include reviewing scholarship criteria, exploring career guidance, or checking the current mentorship process.

Put the answer into practice

  • Choose one activity or service relevant to a current goal.
  • Read its eligibility, access, and participation rules.
  • Prepare the materials or questions needed to use it well.
  • Keep an accurate record of completed work or learning.

For example, preparing a scholarship application involves checking the prompt, gathering evidence, and submitting required materials. It does not mean receiving an award. Describe the action you completed and keep membership status separate from outcomes.
