Honor Society® Expert FAQ

What questions should you ask before joining an honor society?

Before joining an honor society, ask what membership means, what you can use, what it costs, and how you can leave or change participation. Clear answers help you compare organizations and make a decision based on your goals rather than the wording of an invitation.

Ask questions that produce verifiable answers

Begin with the organization’s exact identity and eligibility rules. If the invitation mentions academic standing or a school relationship, ask how that claim was established. Membership, academic recognition, and scholarship selection should be explained separately.

Then ask how participation works in practice. A list of benefits is not enough if you cannot tell which are included, whether they are available, or how to access them. Keep a copy of any terms that influence your decision.

Put the answer into practice

  • What does joining recognize, and what criteria apply?
  • Is the organization independent or affiliated with my school?
  • Which benefits are included with the option I am considering?
  • Are charges one-time or recurring, and when do they renew?
  • How do I cancel, request help, or ask about a refund?
  • What can I realistically accomplish through participation this month?

For Honor Society® specifically, the Transparency Statement, requirements, and dues pages address these topics. Read them together and ask Member Services about anything that remains unclear. A useful answer should describe the actual terms without promising an individual outcome.
