When does the FAFSA open?
FAFSA generally opens ahead of the school year it funds, with October 1 the standard annual target. Confirm the actual opening for your award year rather than relying on a date from an older application cycle.
What to know before you act
As of October 2026, Federal Student Aid lists the 2027–28 form as available. The 2026–27 form covers attendance from July 2026 through June 2027; the next form covers the following award year. Summer enrollment can require school-specific guidance about which form to use.
Preparing early gives you time to resolve contributor access, financial questions, and missing documents before priority deadlines. The opening date and your college’s priority deadline are different dates, so record both.
