Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Where can first-generation students find scholarships?
First-generation students can search college financial aid offices, campus first-generation programs, community organizations, and verified scholarship directories. Each provider defines “first-generation” for its own award, so check the wording before deciding whether it fits your family’s educational history.
Do not assume every definition is identical
A program may focus on whether a parent completed a particular degree, with its own rules for family circumstances or education outside the country. Ask the provider if the definition does not clearly address your situation. Do not alter or omit information to fit a label.
The award may also have GPA, financial-need, residency, or enrollment conditions. In an essay, connect your experience to the actual prompt. You do not need to describe every private family detail to explain your goals and preparation.
Put the answer into practice
- Read the provider’s first-generation definition.
- Check all additional eligibility requirements.
- Ask your college about a separate campus scholarship application.
- Prepare relevant examples and requested documentation.
Use the local scholarship search guide to identify community-based options. A clear explanation of your educational path is more useful than relying on the label alone.
