What is the history of Kappa Delta Pi?

In 1909, University of Illinois Professor of Education Dr. William Chandler Bagley and a group of four of his students, including Truman Lee Kelley and Thomas E. Musselman, founded the Illinois Education Club. On March 8, 1911, that club became Kappa Delta Pi, chosen from the Greek words to represent knowledge, duty, and power. From its inception, Kappa Delta Pi has been synonymous with scholarship, innovation, and excellence in the field of education.

 What are the requirements to be in Kappa Delta Pi?

 Undergraduate Student Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an institution offering an education degree and have the intent to continue academically and professionally in the field of education;
  • Demonstrate leadership attributes and commitment to equity;
  • Have completed at least 18 credits of collegiate course work;
  • Have at least 6 credit hours in education course work programmed, in progress, or completed;
  • Demonstrate a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater or ranking in the upper 20% of the school; and
  • Receive an invitation to membership from the chapter at the college where you are currently enrolled (if a chapter operates on your campus).

Graduate Student Requirements

  • Have graduate standing in an institution offering an education degree and have the intent to continue academically and professionally in the field of education;
  • Demonstrate leadership attributes and commitment to equity;
  • Have completed at least 6 credit hours of graduate course work;
  • Have at least 6 credit hours in education course work programmed, in progress, or completed; and
  • Demonstrate a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher for all graduate coursework completed or ranking in the upper 18.75% of the institution or school.

Doctoral Student Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an institution offering an education degree and have the intent to continue academically and professionally in the field of education;
  • Demonstrate leadership attributes and commitment to equity; and
  • Show evidence of work toward a doctoral degree in education.

 Our first observation is: that this society was not only formed to help professionals get in touch with each other, but to help people facing similar issues. 

Our second observation was: that this society allows its members to present at events and webinars, which stands out from other societies. 

Our third observation was: that this society offers memberships to people pursuing a doctorate degree in education, which is a very niche community.
