About

I am a teacher's aid in special education at a local high school. I am interested in engaging in work that reaches and teaches both children and adults. I'm am exploring graduate school at both the master's and P.h.D level and investigating counseling psychology. I am incredibly fascinated by the development of well-minded, conscious societies. More specifically, by design, a community could engineer systems that rear more stable, engaged, and loving adults who raise healthier children. And a more sustainable planet.

Goals and interests

Career goal

Although I am currently researching various roles in the mental health field, counseling psychology is a forerunner primarily for the multiple career options it offers and also because it is a field that I can engage with at either masters or doctorate level.

For example, apart from the traditional career choice of group or private practice, other counseling psych positions allow graduates to implement what they have learned in their graduate education. I am naturally a creative/social type, but I'm also an intellectual and love the balance of education that counseling psychology provides. Within the field, I can receive the clinical/research aspect of training, as one might find in a clinical psych program, as well as the counseling/therapeutic training one might receive as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) or licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).

Graduate school interests

I'm am exploring graduate school at both the masters and P.h.D level for counseling psychology.

Outside the classroom

Nomadic in nature, a mountain ranger, tree-hugging, dirt-loving, tiny-housing, ink-slinger (creative writing), bee-keeper, husky-owning songbird. I love exploring literature, history, science, particularly quantum physics, and having philosophical conversations beside a campfire. I also love musicals.

Volunteering

  • I later went on to volunteer for a non-profit, whose mission is to build schools, educate and feed impoverished children living in one of Kenya's largest slums, Kibera. I graphically designed for their social media accounts and helped to fundraise. Now contractually employed with them, I manage their social media, aid in planning the fundraising campaigns, Copywrite, and work with the film production team. I love my work with this organization, but working closely with severely impoverished communities who regularly struggle with issues such as sanitation, disease, starvation, unemployment, corrupt government agencies, gun violence, and riots can take a toll on the human spirit. I am constantly reminded that I can't save, feed, educate, and protect every child, which is a painful reality to accept.

  • I've taken on little projects here and there working with The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) helping to maintain national parks and once served on an animal rescue team while living abroad. I've always enjoyed being knee-deep in nature and loved my time volunteering on conservation projects and in animal welfare.

  • After returning to the states, I took a volunteer position and later an internship with an organization called World Relief (W.R.). I worked for W.R. primarily as an ESL teacher for a small Burmese refugee community and gained experience on the organizational level. I loved my time interning with W.R. and found teaching English as a second language to the non-English speaking Burmese very challenging. I became responsible for planning my lessons and had no idea where to begin in the early days. I think I experienced more "culture shock" during that experience than I did in all my travel years.

  • I began my volunteering experience overseas at the age of 14. From a young age, I always wanted to travel, learn, and experience other cultures. I found opportunities with churches, and later privately organized with local communities to work in outreach, building and renovation projects, and education initiatives. By the time I was 18 and graduating high school, I had traveled to and lived in five different countries. These first experiences abroad gave me perspective, real-world experience, and exposure to cultural diversity -- it's where I developed my love for people and equity work.
