Goals and interests
- Career goal
My passion in life switched from becoming a preschool teacher to a counseling psychologist in the span of a year and I can say that was the best choice for my education since. I found that my passion to be around people was much deeper than teaching them to make a snowflake out of a piece of paper. I wanted to see what they wanted to make, why they wanted to make it, why they didn’t like what someone else made, and so on. The behavioral aspect of humans is what inspired me to study psychology and find a new passion for counseling. For the past 6 years, I have focused on my education and understanding of the different fields of psychology to find where my skills would fit in. I knew that the biggest impact that was ever made on me was from my high school counselor, and I figured I wanted to make that same impact. I have always found interest in helping people understand their emotions, behaviors, and how to understand the world around them. With this pathway in mind, my career goal is to become a Counseling Psychologist. I am currently in my last semester before I receive my Bachelors from Sacramento State and I am looking to apply for the Psychology Masters Program in October. Over the summer I am looking to receive my Real Estate License and include myself in an Internship offered in New York to gain some experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders or other cognitive disabilities. This opportunity is offered at Camp Ramapo and would allow me to develop skills to work with a broad range of children, learn how to understand children's behavior as communication, and learn how to create environments that celebrate strengths and enable children to gain a self of belonging. Hopefully, I receive this internship over the summer so I can return from this opportunity and start working with the Psychology Masters Program. After I get my Masters Degree, I would like to obtain a License from the Board of Behavioral Sciences. With this in mind, I would need to have hours of interning or practicum of supervised clinical experience before I pass the required exam. For all practicing counseling psychologists, they are required to be state licensed, completion of doctoral degree, and a passing score on the examination for Professional Practice of Psychology. Some states also require that you have experience in clinical postdoctoral internships and an ethics examination. There is plenty of potentials to move up in this profession.
