About
My name is Amir and I'm a Persian international student and I'm currently pursuing a pre-medical track toward a medical degree. I was born in Ahvaz; a city in southern Iran recognized for their warmth, generosity, and hospitality of it's people, as they prioritized kindness, support, and respect for others. I completed my elementary education in Ahvaz before continuing my academic journey in Tehran.
Starting middle school I was admitted to Iran’s National Organization for Development of Exceptional Talents (NODET); A highly selective network of schools designed to educate academically gifted students through a rigorous and competitive curriculum. This achievement coincided with my relocation to Tehran, the capital of Iran where I continued my education through middle and high school. I earned my high school diploma from Allameh Helli High School of Tehran; one of the leading NODET institutions.
I am now pursuing an undergraduate degree as a pre-medical student with a strong interest in medicine. While I'm exploring multiple medical specialties I'm particularly drawn to surgery due to it's combination of technical skill and direct impact on patient outcomes. My personal experiences that involved me to constantly move between environments paly an important role in guiding my long-term goal of becoming a physician.
Goals and interests
- Career goal
I plan to pursue a career in medicine beginning with my undergraduate studies on a pre-medical track and continuing through medical school. My goal is to become a physician and I am especially interested in surgical fields because they combine hands-on work and the ability to make a direct difference in patients’ lives.
At the same time I understand that medical training involves exposure to many specialties and I am open to learning from a wide range of clinical experiences before choosing a specific path. My academic background and personal experiences have helped me develop a strong work ethic, adaptability, and a commitment to caring for others. Ultimately, I hope to practice medicine with both technical skill and compassion; placing patient well-being at the center of my work.
- Outside the classroom
Music has been an important part of my life from an early age. As a child, I was introduced to the piano and later the violin, though I did not fully appreciate these instruments at the time. That early exposure, however, became a strong foundation when I rediscovered music at the beginning of high school through Persian traditional music. Learning instruments such as the tar and oud allowed me to engage deeply with the emotional depth, storytelling, and melodic complexity of Persian music, a tradition known for its expressive modes and rich musical heritage. During high school, I performed with fellow musicians at various events both within and outside of school. I continue to share my musical work through my Instagram page, @amtabesh, where my performances and recordings are available.
In addition to music, basketball has been a long-standing personal interest. I began playing at the start of middle school, and despite the academic demands of high school, I remained committed to the sport. I earned a place on my high school’s basketball team and consistently made time to practice, often using the game as a way to clear my mind and recharge. Basketball has taught me discipline, persistence, and teamwork, while also providing a valuable personal outlet.
Volunteering
-
I began volunteering at Corazón Medical Clinic in San Antonio during my most recent semester and continue to serve there on an ongoing basis. The clinic is supported by a dedicated interdisciplinary medical team committed to providing care for underserved and unhoused populations, creating a collaborative and compassionate clinical environment. My role allows me to actively support patient care through taking and recording vital signs, assisting with patient charting, and preparing prescription medications in the pharmacy section under supervision. What I value most about volunteering at Corazón is not the act of volunteering itself, but the sense of fulfillment that comes from helping patients address their health concerns, even in small but meaningful ways. Regardless of the size of my role, I take pride in being reliable and engaged, often striving to be among the first to arrive and the last to leave. This experience continues to reinforce my commitment to medicine and service.
