About

Most people writing their personal statement needed for the application of the National Honors Society are sitting there thinking, “If I get into this program I’m going to stand out way more than anyone else and I’ll get the scholarships over people not in this program,” although this could be true, after reading through the website and advancing my knowledge of this program, I have realized it is so much more than that. Being a part of the National Honors Society is about being a leader, being determined, and most importantly being dedicated and serious about your career and success.
Growing up, I was raised by two parents who never went to college, yet I was always pushed to be successful. Slacking off in school and getting D’s, F’s, or even C’s was not acceptable. From middle school all the way through high school I have always been involved with school and extracurricular activities, but still managed to maintain a 4.0 and receive Principals honor roll. Starting in 7th grade in ASB, (associated student body), I began developing many leadership skills. Being in charge of planning school dances, encouraging people to go, planning lunch activities, and overall being a part of the group that created many school memories for everyone and being someone to look up to has taught me many life lessons while helping me to acquire many leadership skills that I still use today. Continuing into 8th grade when I was a part of yearbook, I had many responsibilities. Having a certain deadline to get all my pictures taken, captions made, and pages turned in, I knew I had to be responsible and get it done or I wouldn’t just be letting myself and yearbook class down, I would be letting the whole school down. Into High School, the responsibilities got bigger and there became, what seemed like, 10 times as many. Being on the cheer team and holding a place on the spirit team is very time consuming, especially when you also have many hours of homework.
Time management skills have been a big factor in getting me through high school and life overall. Coaching my own team for the Norco junior all American football program, performing at the Crystal Roses cancer fundraiser, participating in a beach clean-up, organizing a food project to feed families in need, and adopting a family for Christmas are some of the many community service and volunteer activities I have been included in. Personally, I have never wished to be rewarded for these accomplishments, they have been voluntarily and allow me to give back to programs that have given to me, or that I want to help out. Not only have I gained many leadership and time management skills I have also gained many personality traits that people value. Being able to talk in front of big groups of people always used to be a fear of mine, but with ASB and cheer I am now able to perform and socialize comfortably in almost any situation. Determination is also one of the many traits I have acquired. Being involved in helping people who weren’t so successful has really opened my eyes to realize I need to start focusing on my future now and strive to be successful.
Overall, I am a very out-going and determined person. My leadership skills and motivation to do the best that I can and achieve all that I can would make me a great fit for the National Honors Society. Being a part of this program will lead me in the path of success and to a brighter future. I look forward to hearing back from the program and getting involved. Thank you for your time and for considering me as a possible candidate for your program.
Sincerely,
Andrea Gonzalez
