About

I think of myself as an unconventional student and a late bloomer. I spent 25 years as a commercial artist and interior designer and decide to change my career path in my forties. I began a low level position in a hospital treatment facility and obtained certification for chemical dependency counseling. I returned to community college and continued onto obtained a Bachelors degree in Psychology. I worked full time, and took classes online while juggling family obligations, travel and attempting to maintain a social life. Not an easy task but well worth the effort. I am proud of myself for not giving in to any inclinations I had to quit. I proved to myself that no matter what happens I can keep going and complete the goal. I should reveal that for me this is pretty important as I dropped out of high school and struggled well into my twenties believing I would never complete my education. I matured and as a result have come to love learning and embrace the challenge it presents.

Goals and interests

Career goal

I currently work as counselor in a residential co-occuring treatment center and plan to continue working this field for several years expanding into mental health. My long term goal is to work with veterans or those who struggle with trauma informed chemical abuse. When I am eligible I plan to do part time individual counseling as well.

Graduate school interests

I have been accepted to Capella University online for my Master in Mental health. It is a CACREP accredited program.

Outside the classroom

I love to travel and spent several weeks in Europe recently. I continue to paint and create what ever my imagination can think of and manifest. Reading, spending valued time with family and friends are priorities. I also like to challenge myself with things like zip lining, kayaking, white water rafting and my future goal of skydiving.
