About

Hello, my name is Ashley Joyner. I currently attend Dominican College Of Blauvelt. At Dominican College, my study of choice is secondary education with a major in history. I recently completed my four years of eligibility in woman's indoor volleyball at Dominican college, at the division two level. Being a student-athlete has helped shape me into the woman I am today. I am a dedicated worker, who knows the importance of time management and working well with others. The pressure of being successful in the classroom, as well as on and off the court is what has kept me grounded. I recently was inducted into the Dominican College, New York Sigma Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma for achieving a 3.4 GPA during the indoor volleyball season. As you can see volleyball is a very important aspect of my life. I have been playing volleyball since the age of fourteen. I also have coached at Upper Chesapeake Volleyball Club for three years, coaching young girls ages thirteen to sixteen. This year I will continue my coaching career by becoming a part of the coaching staff at Dominican college holding the job title of "Assistant Coach" while I finish my undergraduate degree. None of this would be possible without the support of my family, friends, and coaches throughout the years. My brother and sister are my biggest role models. My brother recently graduated from Howard University in Washington DC, and my sister graduated from Bridgewater College in Virginia. They have proven to me that anything is possible if I am dedicated and work hard for the things that I want. I strive to be as great as them and accomplish every goal I set. Once I graduate I hope to become a high school history teacher. Teaching is a career I love, and I hope to touch the lives of my many students giving them information that they can take with them, and use not only in the classroom but in their everyday lives.

Goals and interests

Career goal

My intended job path is to become a high school history teacher. I also plan on continuing my coaching career.

Graduate school interests

I have not settled on a specific Grad school as of yet, but I am considering attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Being a History major, as well as an African American and Native American woman of color it is very important to me to be educated in all aspects of American history, and that includes Black History. At Dominican College, there are no history classes that focus specifically on African American studies, therefore I am considering Howard University in Washington Dc. MY brother graduated from Howard Univeristy in the year 2015 and the school has provided him with many amazing opportunities. I hope the school I choose can do the same for me.

Outside the classroom

My hobbies consist of anything that has fitness involved especially volleyball. Volleyball is my favorite thing to do and I never turn down an opportunity to play ball. Along with volleyball, I like running, cardio, lifting, and swimming. Aside from athletics I find peace in art. I've been drawing since I was about four years old and have grown to love it. I have even entered my artwork in a few art shows and have had pieces sold.
