About

Hello! My name is Desiree. I'm currently earning my bachelor's in film at Eastern Washington University. As an older, or returning student, I understand the true importance and privilege of a higher education. I was raised by a single mom, a teacher; and she instilled in me the need to live forbearing and adaptable. And, above all else, the understanding that helping others and lifting our community is not simply our duty, but the only way we can collectively progress. While, in my teen years we could not afford the cost for me to attend college, following my mother's passing in 2019, I have made it my unyielding goal to fulfil our shared dream of a higher education for myself. In 2022 I completed my high school diploma through the Spokane Community College Adult Education Program. From Spring 2022 through Spring 2024, I earned my associates in applied science in Digital Filmmaking at Spokane Falls Community College. At present, I am one year away from completing my bachelors at Eastern Washington University. Without the spiritual support from my mother and the financial support and trust of my local community, I would not be where I am now. I understand the gravity of faith my community has instill in me and my educational journey thus far and I will not falter on my path. With gratitude, trust, and hope I continue to overcome obstacles, rise above expectations, and push beyond even the limitations I set upon myself. I am sincerely grateful to have made it this far. And I see no reason to stop striving now. Thank you!

  • Honor Society

I earned my membership in the Honor Society in Fall 2025. The Honor Society recognizes students who strive to rise above expectations in academics, leadership, and community.

  • Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Society

Beyond academic achievement, Phi Sigma Pi seeks students who want to expand their learning into leadership and community-based service. I earned my place in the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor (gender inclusive) fraternity in Winter 2026.

  • EWU's Retiree's Association Golden Eagle Selectee

Four students from within the arts, technology, and sciences degree paths at EWU are selected each year for their academic achievements and progress. I was selected this Spring for the coming Fall through Spring quarters (my final degree path year).

Goals and interests

Career goal

As I progress on my academic journey, I am working toward a future career in the film industry. With every assignment or project, I am granted at EWU, I see the potential to challenge myself, push past my comfort zone to further fortify what I will bring to the position of Film Director, Screenwriter, or Producer. My growing skills and experiences not only make me a commodity to any potential film crew, but a stronger individual able to think critically and make the best choice possible for the project, my collaborators, and myself in a timely and professional manner.

Graduate school interests

Upon graduating from Eastern Washington University, I plan to continue my education in any way possible; whether it be through another university or from taking on new experiences in my local filmmaking community, library, and online resources. I am earnestly interested in pursuing an MFA in Screenwriting or English through NYU, The Los Angeles Film School, or AFI.
Whatever my path will be, I will continue to create cinema, write, challenge myself, and volunteer my support to my friends and peers in my local community whenever possible.

Outside the classroom

As a multifaceted creative, I constantly seek art, literature, and the profound beauty of life every day. There is not a moment that goes by where I feel having a pen or camera in each hand is the ideal. One of the most important things I've learned on my academic journey is that the only true limitation I face - is the one I set upon myself. Discovering this has become a bridge for my progress, not simply creatively in my filmic art, writing, photography and other forms of expression, but in facing the obstacles I am most afraid to take on, I have become a stronger, more confident and centered individual. Challenging myself has become as much a hobby as cinema and writing for me. I no longer fear what I cannot do, I simply understand that I don't yet know how to achieve it! For me, finding happiness in the little moments, reading, going to the movies, spending time with animals and nature, and being with my loved ones are exceptional ways to enjoy my free time when it arrives. :)
