A career path which I am considering for my future is that of a substance abuse counselor. Substance abuse counselors provide assistance and therapy to clients wishing to stop their use and abuse of alcohol and drugs. I am considering this field because of my personal experience with substance abuse and a desire to help others towards recovery, as well. In order to further understand this occupation, an acquaintance who works in the field and who possesses a similar background agreed to meet with me to discuss her career. Pros: It is a highly challenging position both in meeting clients' needs and in teaching other staff about what is required. It can be very satisfying when client phases up, learns a new skill or insight, or graduates. Cons: There is constant drama with clients and management.
Santa Barbara City Collage has opened this door for me. Along the way, I have taken courses that have helped my metal state of mind as well. Yoga beginning/intermediate, Pilates, and Weight Training beginning/intermediate. ADC classes can be heavy on the heart and mind forcing me to look not only at myself and my life, but also putting myself constantly in question about being a mother, a good person and positive roll model for my children and peers.. Almost every Professor I have had has been an amazing roll model whom has bent over backwards to assist me in my journey as 40 year single mother of 2 with a full time job and a full-time student. I feel blessed every day very fortunate to be part of this community.
