About

Hello, my name is Jamila Omar & I am 19 years old. I’ve always had trouble with being confident & not knowing who I am. Especially during high school, it was a really tough time for me, being the youngest & having a lot of responsibilities at a young age was very hard & draining for me. I feel like things at home made things hard for me at school for example things like communicating with people, not being able to stand up for myself from time to time & being afraid to ask questions in front of the class just because of my anxiety. Having anxiety & facing things at home did not stop me from being a good student, a hardworking person & also, a person that does not give up! I can’t give up especially coming from a different country & how my parents made sacrifices coming to the United States fighting for me & my siblings to get an education! My hard work gets me good grades & also a 90 GPA. With family, friends & teachers around me, they help me grow, being confident & accepting myself for who I am. I do believe we all have positive and negative traits that make us the person that we are. Religion and counseling both played a big role for me in finding my identity and that's how I overcame my social anxiety. I chose the psychology major because I proceeded through mental health behaviors and want to help others overcome them. Also, the reason why I want to join this program it’s because when I was told about the program from the admission I immediately felt like it fit my skill sets for my education once I established I had the background for the program I then went to the honors website to read about the program to learn more like what you guys provide for students that benefits them. I love learning & trying new things out. Also, I am a very hard-working student that likes challenges especially when it comes to my education! That’s why I feel like this program would be a good fit for me.

Goals and interests

Career goal

My goal career path is becoming a therapist. I am looking for experience to enter into a mental health/behavioral health career path. I am interested in how and why people think and act, learning about their trauma and what lead them to their current point. Mental health and behavioral health impacts everyone depending on their experiences and I want to develop the skill sets to help others.

Graduate school interests

Before Covid I’ve always wanted to go to college but I did not know what for. Psychology was always in my mind but I was not confident in taking the major because I had trouble with communication, talking to people, did not believe in myself and was very selective on who I tell my feelings to. So, I put that major to the side. During Covid I changed my mind about school I was not interested in it anymore. Before graduation I was already getting told by my high school teachers, my parents and other people were always talking to me about college because they knew I did not want to go so they were trying to change my mind. At some point they were pressuring me into and got into my head and that’s when I felt like a failure and kept putting myself down. One day I’ve talked to a lady that helped me she told I did not have to go to college I could go to training school it’s a better option so I applied to Northland Workforce Training Center and applied for Electrical Construction. I had no idea about any electrical things but I still went for it to make my parents happy even though it was not something I wanted to do. Even though that was not something I’ve wanted to do I was proud of myself because I took that step and went for it and told myself “it’s good to try out different things I might like it.” Before I even started school, I was already putting myself down because I kept on telling myself “I can’t do this” “I don’t think I’ll be able to do that” “what if I don’t like it” I was already having self-doubts. First day of school I was very nervous because it was a new and fresh start, first day went well as time went by I realized electrical construction was not a major that I’ve wanted to do. I gave it some thoughts before I changed my major because I felt like I was giving up on it too fast but then I told myself “this is something I don’t see myself doing in the future.” I’ve changed my whole mindset on how I think so I’m going for psychology major it always been something I’ve always want to do and confident in. I love helping people and talking about emotions.
