About

My name is Julia Wilkins. I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri; however, from a young age, I had a strong desire to explore as much of the world as possible. My mother grew up with very limited resources and opportunities. Despite this, she was able to put herself through college and become a teacher. Her biggest life regret was not seeing more of the world before she married. I took the opportunity to study abroad, and teach a largely refugee population in London, England. This sparked my desire to work in schools in both Honduras and Switzerland for the next eight years. Teaching at international schools provided me the opportunity to travel to over thirty countries, and examine the educational systems of schools across four different continents. Two years ago, I moved back to the United States, and teach at an Elementary School that welcomes families of very diverse backgrounds. I work to help my students learn the rewards of interacting with others who are different, even in our own little corner of the world.

Goals and interests

Career goal

I am in the first year of my doctoral program and am currently narrowing down my dissertation focus. My ultimate goal is to use my experiences as a teacher in a variety of countries to help nonprofit organizations such as museums, community organizations, and local government municipalities create educational programs that can be offered to everyone.

Graduate school interests

My graduate school programs have afforded me the opportunity to examine education in nontraditional school settings. I am using the next 2.5 years of this program to continue to look at education and what we can do to bring creativity back to learning. I recently was awarded a spot in the Graduate Student Leadership Development Program which will help me explore my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. I believe this will continue to allow me to work with people from a variety of different backgrounds in a productive and respectful manner.
