About
I will graduate from Fontbonne University with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management with an emphasis in science in May 2017. My first goal is to become a histology supervisor/manager. I also have several goals to fulfill within the next three years to increase involvement: in Missouri Society for Histology, National Society for Histotechnology, and let histology be known. Histology is the science of Histology is a hidden gem that needs to be showcased and publicized to make sure that histology technicians do not become extinct.
Histology is the scientific study of the fine detail of biological cells and tissues using microscopes to look at specimens of tissues that have been carefully prepared using special processes called "histological techniques". It is a discipline that is essential for the understanding and advancement of biology, medicine, veterinary medicine and many sub-disciplines within those scientific subjects.
The majority of the histotechnicians in the USA are either getting close to retirement or already have retired. Even with increasing automation, more histotechs will be needed to fill the gap. More importantly we need histotechnicians/histotechnologists who care, not just about the quality of their work, but the patient behind the specimen is the true importance and it makes a huge difference in healthcare.

Goals and interests
- Career goal
I plan on either being a histology manger or starting a histology program here in St. Louis. St. Louis is a major metropolitan Midwestern city, but St. Louis has no histology education courses or programs available within 150 miles radius. I have become more and more passionate about this each year and now I start working on making it happen. I just set up a meeting with my Dean next month (in January '17) to see what we can do to bring this program onto our campus. This is very early into the process, but I feel the needs are there.
- Graduate school interests
My professor in Strategic Management in Healthcare told me this after he graded the final paper, " Julie, really nicely done. You have shown great insight to strategy, both in this paper and throughout the course. You are an excellent candidate for graduate school. Much of your work is already at that level. I hope you pursue that."
After much thought, I will apply for graduate school, at my Fontbonne University. The Management and Leadership Master's degree is what I am interested in pursing. The psychology in workplace behavior was highlighted after there was some drama at my job and I would rather be prepared than not.
- Outside the classroom
My son keeps me busy but now that he is in first grade, he does his homework right away as he as seen me busy with homework. I hope I am being a good role model for him. If I am not doing homework or working, I try to spend as much time as I can with him.
