About

Greetings! As you may already know, my name is Leticia.

I was born in Maturín, Venezuela; a beautiful but dangerous city; however, I remember those days with warm love as I was surrounded by my extended family. At the age of eight, my feet landed on an unfamiliar country named Ecuador along with my mom.

We spent about 4 years in Ecuador, moving from place to place; state to state. Even though most of my memories were pleasant, this was not the case for my mother, who had to fight against discrimination and financial hardships to keep us both safe and stable. In a desperate attempt to deal with these issues -soon after my aunt moved in with us- we traveled to Mexico, where we stayed for 2 years.

Just like before, we had to move around until we found a room at a shared house. This room became our home and the place the three of us shared with love and hard work. Due to safety concerns, my mom and I had to drastically move from Mexico straight to the United States; however, my aunt decided to stay in Mexico.

A year after moving to Orlando, Florida, my mom and I moved to South Carolina, looking for a better education that would allow me to reach my ultimate goal of becoming a professional neurosurgeon. It is worth emphasizing that it wasn’t until I moved to South Carolina that I was able to learn English -thanks to my amazing teacher-; however, I kept my grades as high as possible.

Goals and interests

Career goal

My goal is to become a neurosurgeon not only because I am passionate about the brain and its functions (I have taken different courses of medicine throughout high school that exposed me to this topic) but also because of my strong empathy for others as I was introduced to community service and volunteering in my Junior year and have accomplished more than 180 hours total.

Outside the classroom

Apart from volunteering and doing community service, I would mostly spend my time doing creative activities such as: drawing, coloring, designing, and decorating. I also enjoy baking, playing badminton, and -might sound strange- solving math problems. All of these activities would help me productively spend my time and are great techniques to deal with stress.
