About

I am currently a senior studying Microbiology at the University of Texas at Austin. I am pursuing a career in medical laboratory science and hope to eventually obtain a Master's degree in Laboratory Management or Healthcare Administration. I grew up in San Antonio, TX where my father still resides and owns a massage spa. My older sister, Jenny, lives in Dallas, TX. Both, my sister and I, attended a medical magnet high school where the curriculum was centered around the medical field and health occupations. As juniors and seniors in high school, we were encouraged to take clinical rotations. That is how I encountered medical laboratory science. In that class, I learned what a medical laboratory scientist does. Over the past few years, my knowledge about medical laboratory science has grown and so has my passion for it. Besides attending school, I have been working at a learning center called Kumon where I tutor children in math and reading. I am also active members in organizations such as China Care and SMLS. In China Care, I am part of a big sister/little sister mentor program where I mentor a little girl who was adopted from China. SMLS is an organization at UT that is dedicated to medical laboratory science and the students that want to pursue a career in it. Last year, I was the vice president and this year, I am the president. As part of the SMLS officer team, we work hard to promote this hidden profession and assist members who apply for the clinical program each year. Whether it's school, work, or extracurriculars I strive to do my best. With each step that I take towards becoming a medical laboratory scientist, I hope to develop my knowledge of science and hone my leadership skills so that I may use it to help my family, friends, and community.

Goals and interests

Career goal

I am pursuing a career in medical laboratory science. After becoming an experienced medical laboratory scientist, I want to become a laboratory manager and eventually, a distinguished laboratory director.

Graduate school interests

I am planning to obtain a Master's degree in laboratory management or healthcare administration.

Outside the classroom

At a young age, I've had an affinity for the arts especially drawing and oil painting. I took private art lessons all throughout middle school and high school to develop my artistic abilities. In high school, I was part of Texas 4-H and Latin club. Within those organizations, I competed in local, regional, state, and national competitions for art and have won first and second place medals. I constantly have little art projects on the side that I work on when I have time or when I'm with my little sister. Recently, I finished painting a nursery collage collection of four canvases for a family friend. I hope that through my art I can express my individuality and bring joy to others.
