About

Hello, I am Rebecca Hasmann. I am 24 years old, and am currently in my second semester of my junior year at St John Fisher College (SJFC). I work about 30 hours a week in my role as a Direct Support Professional, taking care of adults with mental disabilities, helping them gain the skills and care they need to be independent and safe. At SJFC, I am pursuing my Bachelors of Science in Nursing and hope to become an ICU or ED RN after graduation. I aspire to be a lead nurse, and eventually hope to become a Nurse Practitioner who then brings care to people who don't have access to healthcare.

Goals and interests

Career goal

After I graduate, I hope to get a position in either the ICU or the Emergency Department. I want to gain experience with caring for patients with many issues so that I can feel confident working in all types of healthcare fields. I would like to focus on community outreach nursing, and help to bring care to those people who might not be able to afford it, or doesn't have the ability to get to a healthcare facility. I think it is important to care for everyone with the same respect and compassion that you would a family member. I truly care about each and every patient that I care for. I hold myself to a standard that might be too high, but if I am for that level, I am always working to improve. I am also interested in going to countries of poverty and helping people in extreme need of care. My dream would be to start an organization as a Nurse Practitioner that brings healthcare, including psychological care, to people who need it the most but can't access it.

Graduate school interests

I have not decided yet which field of graduate nursing I would like to pursue yet. I have contemplated going back to school for my Nurse Practitioner degree after I get a few years of work experience as an RN. As I mentioned in my "Intended Job Path", I am aspiring to one day bring healthcare services to people who cannot afford it or do not have access to healthcare. I believe everyone deserves the same level and quality of care, no matter their economical status.

Outside the classroom

When I have free time, I really enjoy being outside and experiencing nature. I love going for hikes because it helps me unwind from the day and relaxes my mind. Another way I choose to destress is through yoga and meditation. I believe a healthy mind brings about a healthy and positive life.

I also like gardening because the process of how a plant grows is amazing to me -- how it can start out as a tiny seed and so quickly grow to become a beautiful flower or tree.

One of my weird hobbies is cleaning. I really enjoy cleaning because it is one task that brings me immediate gratification. I am able to literally see a mess dissolve and turn into a clean and peaceful home.
