Positive relationships, help us to live longer, healthier, and have happier lives. Multiple studies, in fact, have shown that individuals accepted into social groups have better physical and psychological consequences; those rejected by social groups have more negative consequences Baumeister, Ciarocco, & Twenge, (2005). One of the many jobs of a counselor is to create a safe and accepting atmosphere for clients to learn skills without judgement. Furthermore, open honest communication and understanding are building blocks for facilitating courageous conversations and establishing rapport.

In Oregon, in order to become a LPC an education and clinical supervision requirement must be met. The education requirement includes obtaining a graduate’s degree in a program that was at least two years and 48 semester or 72 quarter credit hours including coursework in a specific area. Programs classes must include counseling theory, human growth & lifespan development, social & cultural foundations, helping relationships, group dynamics, lifestyle & career development, diagnosis & appraisal of individuals, research & evaluations, profession orientation, clinical/applied experience (Practicum/internship), and supporting coursework (specialty areas 16 or 24 quarter hours). In order to fulfill the supervision requirement the applicant must accrue 2400 hours of CCH (Client Contact Hours) which includes 240 hours of clinical experience with on-site mental health supervision (at least two hours of supervision each month), 600 educational program practicum/internship hours (at least three hours or more client contact hours). Since, I am employed at Benton County Mental Health Department, I can satisfy these hours over the course of my education and post education.
