Sofia Rivero Torres

I am Sofia Rivero Torres. I came from Cuba three years ago when I was a junior in High School. I did not know the language and struggled a lot. I had to complete in two years what my classmates were supposed to complete in four years. I was bullied even by my professors because of my bad pronunciation and accent since I was an ESOL one level student, but any of these stopped me. During my first month in High School I passed the PERT with an outstanding score. Then every quarter I was awarded as an honor student. I completed all the requirements in order to graduate during my first year. I took over five online courses, and finished with over 130 community service hours. During my senior year I was taken out of ESOL, so in just a year I went from ESOL level one to ESOL level five and I was awarded as the Outstanding ESOL student of the year. Now in college, I have been in the Dean's List every semester and because of my GPA I got the invite to join PTK. So this is me. Someone who does not give up, someone that always will put education as my first priority, someone who does not want to stop growing as a person, and someone who wants to inspire to any student out there that it does not matter if you start late, it is never late to be who you might been. My career goal is to become a nurse anesthetist. I choose this profession not only for me, but because I wanted to honor my parents who sacrificed their own professions, nursing and physician, in order for me to have a brilliant future in this country that grants opportunities for those who work hard. During this pandemic I realized how important nurses are, they are superheros. They save lives by even putting theirs at risk. I want to be one of them. I want to be someone else's superhero.
