About

Steven Paul is a graduate student in Transportation and Highway Engineering at South Carolina State University, where he serves as a graduate research assistant and volunteers as a Swahili instructor. His research focuses on transportation safety, intersection crash reduction, and data-driven infrastructure design through the application of computer vision and artificial intelligence in video-based traffic conflict analysis. He is also working on innovative methods for estimating Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) on uncounted roadways using probe-vehicle data and machine learning techniques.

Beyond research, Steven serves as Vice President of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Student Chapter and is an IBM Ambassador at SCSU, supporting student engagement in engineering and emerging technologies. He has led his team to First Place in the BECT AI Competition, where they solved a simulated multimillion-dollar supply chain crisis using data-driven modeling. He is also the co-founder of a student-led charity organization dedicated to mentoring and supporting underserved youth. His work is driven by a commitment to equity, innovation, and advancing transportation systems that improve safety, access, and opportunity for all communities.
