Induction requires nomination by a local chapter and, to be eligible, students must have a 3.5 GPA in Religious Studies and/or Theology and a 3.0 GPA overall. Residency, class ranking, and unit requirements must also be met.
What is the history of Theta Alpha Kappa?
In 1976, Professor Albert Clark, F.S.C., established Theta Alpha Kappa at Manhattan College in Riverdale (the Bronx), New York for the purpose of recognizing the academic achievements of religion and theology students. Since then, Theta Alpha Kappa has grown to more than two hundred chapters nationally in four-year educational institutions ranging from small religiously affiliated colleges to large public research institutions. It is the only national honor society dedicated to recognizing academic excellence in baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate students and in scholars in the fields of Religious Studies and Theology.

If you are interested in learning more about Theta Alpha Kappa, you are encouraged to check with your department chair, program director or Dean to see whether your institution has a chartered chapter. If your institution does not, you can share with your department or program your interest and call their attention to the Theta Alpha Kappa website. There are many opportunities available for student members, which include fellowships, awards and opportunities to publish in a peer-reviewed journal. The National Board has no mechanism for inducting students, however; students who meet eligibility requirements can be inducted only through chartered chapters in good standing.

Our first observation was: that Theta Alpha Kappa states it is the only society to recognize the academic achievements of religion and theology students.
Our second observation was: while many colleges report a lack of interest in theology, this society has managed to thrive, with more than two hundred chapters nationally in four-year educational institutions.
Our third observation was: that the society’s website encourages students to consider creating a chapter, as this society can operate at any sort of educational institution, meaning that the interest for this must be larger than anticipated.
