How to Put Dean’s List on Your Résumé Without Overstating It
List dean’s list on your résumé with the institution and the exact terms or years earned, using concise wording that does not imply continuous recognition unless it is true.
Dean’s list can help a student or recent graduate show academic achievement. The common mistake is not including it; it is making the dates vague enough to imply a longer record than the award supports. Precise wording keeps the recognition credible.
Honor Society® connects achievement with career preparation. A clear education entry lets a reader understand the honor quickly and move on to the experience that supports your application.
Quick answers
Should dean’s list go under Education or Awards?
Either can work. Education is usually concise for a small number of academic distinctions; a separate section can help when several relevant awards deserve attention.
How do I list dean’s list for selected semesters?
Name the actual terms or use an accurate count with appropriate context. Avoid a year range that could imply every term if that is not true.
Can I say “every semester”?
Only if the official record supports that claim for the period you mean. Consider leaves, part-time terms and terms when the distinction was not awarded.
Should experienced professionals keep dean’s list?
Use judgment based on relevance and space. Recent, job-related accomplishments may deserve priority, while a concise education entry can retain meaningful distinctions.
Verify the award before choosing the wording
Check the official title and dates. A school may use “Dean’s Honor List,” “Academic Honor Roll” or another designation. Preserve the name rather than normalizing every award to the same phrase.
The University of South Carolina’s honor-list page is one example of institution-published term recognition. Use your school’s record for your own entry and the dean’s-list comparison guide to distinguish related awards.
Use a concise format that matches the record
These are fictional examples of wording.
| Record | Clear résumé wording |
|---|---|
| Two specific terms | Dean’s List, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 |
| Several nonconsecutive terms | Dean’s List, four semesters |
| All eligible terms in a stated period | Dean’s List, each enrolled semester, 2023–2025 |
| Different official award | President’s Honor Roll, Spring 2025 |
Use the third format only when its wording accurately describes the record and does not conceal an exception. If an application requires individual dates, provide them even when the résumé uses a summary.
Decide whether the honor adds useful evidence
Include it when it strengthens a student or early-career education entry, supports an academic application or helps show sustained performance. Consider removing or shortening it when the document is crowded and stronger relevant evidence is available.
Fictional example: A new graduate applying for an analytical role lists confirmed term honors in one line, then uses the saved space for a project demonstrating data checking. The award supports the story without replacing the evidence of skill.
Keep GPA and honors separate
Dean’s list does not establish a universal GPA, class rank or graduation distinction. If you include GPA, label the correct value and scale. Do not convert term recognition into “graduated with honors” unless a separate graduation honor was awarded.
Read semester versus cumulative GPA and Latin honors on a résumé if the distinctions are getting mixed together. For missing or inconsistent records, use the correction guide.
Review the whole education entry
Check that the institution, degree, dates and awards use a consistent style. Remove repeated information from a separate awards section if it appears identically under Education without adding value.
Honor Society AI™ describes its résumé-preparation direction. If you use AI to condense the entry, check that “selected terms” has not become “every semester” and that no unsupported ranking has been added. The student résumé prompt guide offers a related verification workflow.
Your next step is to list the exact awarded terms in your private achievement record, then choose the shortest résumé wording that remains faithful to them.
