Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do colleges evaluate leadership experience?
Colleges can evaluate leadership through what you did: identifying a need, helping others contribute, making decisions, and following through. A formal officer title is one possible setting, not a requirement.
Show a decision and its effect on other people
Explain a concrete situation, your responsibility, the action you took, and the result or lesson. A group project, family responsibility, job, or service commitment can show leadership when the description supports it. Acknowledge collaborators and avoid taking credit for an entire organization’s output.
Honor Society’s Emerging Leaders Scholarship gives students another place to examine how leadership experiences connect with award criteria. Preparing a truthful example can serve both a college application and a suitable scholarship application, though each prompt needs its own response.
Your next steps
- Choose one situation that required initiative or judgment.
- Describe your own decision and how you involved others.
- Use a supportable outcome and a thoughtful lesson.
