Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you follow up after an internship application?
Follow up on an internship application after the employer’s stated response window has passed, unless the posting asks applicants not to contact the team. If no timeline is given, a brief check-in after a reasonable interval can be appropriate.
Use the employer’s timeline and a concise message
Use a verified contact and include the role title, application date, and a short expression of continued interest. For example: “I applied for the research internship on March 3 and remain interested in the team’s work. Could you share any update on the selection timeline?” Adjust the details to your situation.
Do not resend an entire application or contact several employees with the same request. One respectful follow-up is usually more useful than repeated messages. Keep applying elsewhere while waiting; silence does not tell you whether you have been rejected or remain under consideration.
Your next steps
- Read the posting and confirmation email for contact instructions.
- Send one short message after the stated timeline passes.
- Track the response and continue your broader search.
