Honor Society® Expert FAQ

When is using AI considered academic dishonesty?

AI use can be academic dishonesty when it violates course rules, misrepresents authorship, or supplies unauthorized assistance on assessed work. The same action may be permitted in one assignment and prohibited in another.

Permission depends on the task and the work being assessed

Read the syllabus and assignment instructions for distinctions between brainstorming, editing, coding, translation, and generating final answers. If the rule is unclear, ask before using AI and keep the response. A general university statement may leave the final assignment rules to the instructor.

Do not assume that adding a citation resolves prohibited use or that a low detection score proves compliance. Keep notes and drafts that reflect your own process. The practical standard is whether you followed the applicable instructions and can explain the work you submit.

Your next steps

  • Identify the specific assignment’s allowed and prohibited uses.
  • Ask about ambiguous cases before relying on assistance.
  • Disclose permitted use and retain an honest work record.
