About

Academics have always been important to me. I was taught at home all through grade school and my parents blessed me with a classical education. I spent my days studying Latin and formal logic while working on weekly essays and reading classic works of literature. My free time was spent reading more books and running in the countryside surrounding my home. My introduction into higher education began at my local community college and I quickly realized that I loved any subject I would study. Unfortunately, that made it increasingly difficult for me to settle down to one field of study and I switched majors twice during the first three years of my college experience. Financial difficulty and family problems led me to put the rest of my education on hold and I stepped away for five years. This past year, after working and supporting myself as an independent adult in the "real" world I made the difficult decision to return to academia and complete my undergraduate degree. Working full time as a nanny and running a household has brought me into the realm of health and nutrition in a practical manner that intrigues me more than the medical field ever has before. I decided to pursue a degree in the field that was most relevant and important to me in my adult life and Nutrition and Dietetics was an effortless choice. Because I am a non-traditional student I commute 45 minutes one way to school and still maintain a 40+ hour work week. I am active in my church and with my family and social circle so making school a priority has led to some sacrifices. However, the sense of pride and accomplishment I have felt after these last two semesters has made all the stress and difficulty worthwhile. I'm excited about the future I am building for myself!

Goals and interests

Career goal

I hope to open my own business as a Registered Dietitian. The health of my local community is important to me and I hope to give back by providing low cost or free nutrition education as well as assistance in leading a holistically healthy lifestyle.

Outside the classroom

My favorite pastime is reading. I have a large collection of murder mysteries concentrating on 20th century British authors. Reading and re-reading those books is one of the best ways for me to unwind and relax. I also enjoy knitting and crocheting and I prefer to combine that hobby with one of my other loves - television. I love knowing the background of film and trivia for the entire film industry. Being able to sit and watch a new documentary or well-scripted TV show while creating something with my hands through knitting is thrilling to me! Apart from that I love to be outside as much as possible and running and hiking are my favorite ways to enjoy nature.
