About
Hello, my name is Monica Barnes. I am currently a senior student at Texas A&M in college station for a bachelor degree in Microbiology and a minor in Oceanography. I transferred in from Houston Community College after getting two associate degrees. I haven't decided on a certain field of Microbiology yet, but I find the environment (such as the ocean) fascinating. However, I love to figure out how things work. For example, some times in my off time at Texas A&M I use their data base to read over research papers on the color blue in vertebrates. After finding out blue jays aren't genetically blue (and that blue pigment is very rare in vertebrates), I took a deep dive into the more specific construct of structural coloring. I am no expert on anything, but I like understanding and knowing new things. It makes the world a more interesting and beautiful place.
I am still trying to find my place in this world, but I know biology and environmental topics are the paths I want to go down. The world is in a very sensitive spot right now with climate change and ocean acidification. If humanity doesn't act now, a lot of things are going to disappear forever and I want to help stop that. I want to help people by helping our planet thrive and be healthy.

Goals and interests
- Career goal
For a job, I am currently thinking of either doing lab work or stuff associated with research. I would think having a hybrid of lab work and on-site work would be great. However, I am trying to keep my mind open to what opportunities are out there.
- Graduate school interests
I am still deciding on what specifically I need to broaden my knowledge. I have not completely decided on whether to go in an environmental direction (such as Oceanography or another environmental subject), a more specific biological route (like molecular biology to further my microbiology knowledge) or to go a more chemical route (like biochemistry or even just a different direction in chemistry). However, I do know I would like to go back to school to get my Master's. I just have to figure out in what topic.
- Outside the classroom
I like to bake (though I am more interested in decorating cakes than eating them). I like to use buttercream frosting to pipe on different patterns and designs. However, I have explored into baking other deserts and have ventrued into cooking to try to eat healthier.
I like to do illustrations with media like pencils, pens, markers, acrylic paint, and India ink.
I have also started recently writing stories, usually focused on fantasy or mystery. However, I haven't gotten that far in it.
I also like to research topics I have discovered or do deeper dives into topics I know (ex: the structural color of blue in vertebrates, or the current status of Chernobyl's radiation and the affect it has on the creatures around it; specifically dogs right now).

Volunteering
-
Volunteered in Animal Shelter in the small dog section and small mammal section. I cleaned up messes in both sections. I kept the animals well watered and showed them to potential adopter. During down time, I would take the dogs out for a walk to help them get out some of their energy and allow them a bathroom break.
