About

My name is Abigail Brugman, and I am currently working toward my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with the lifelong goal of becoming a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse. My passion for this career began at the age of 12, after a deeply personal experience that changed my life. When my baby brother was born prematurely and spent time in the NICU, I witnessed firsthand the skill, compassion, and dedication of the nurses who cared not only for him, but for our entire family. Watching them advocate for him, comfort my family, and remain calm and capable in a high-pressure environment left a lasting impression on me. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to be that person for someone else to provide hope, healing, and care during the most vulnerable moments of a family's life.

Since beginning my journey in nursing school, I have fully immersed myself in opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. I proudly serve as a student ambassador at Galen College of Nursing, where I support prospective and current students, represent the college at events, and help create a positive learning environment. I’ve also had the privilege of being involved in a sorority, which has strengthened my sense of sisterhood, service, and leadership.

Currently, I am gaining hands-on clinical experience as a nurse extern at Skyline Medical Center. This role has deepened my understanding of patient care, time management, and the importance of teamwork in a hospital setting. Every day, I get to work alongside experienced nurses and see the kind of dedication and critical thinking it takes to provide high-quality care lessons I know will serve me well in the NICU.

Outside of school and work, I volunteer regularly at my church, helping with outreach events, assisting with children’s programs, and supporting families in need. This service has kept me grounded and focused on the importance of compassion, humility, and human connection, core values that I believe every great nurse should carry.

Becoming a NICU nurse is not just my goal, it’s my calling. I am committed to developing the clinical knowledge, emotional strength, and compassionate heart needed to care for newborns and support their families. I believe this career will allow me to make a meaningful difference in the world, one tiny life at a time, and I couldn’t be more excited for the journey ahead.

Outside the classroom

Outside of nursing, I have a deep appreciation for spending time in nature and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. I absolutely love being out on the lake, especially paddle boarding, it’s one of my favorite ways to relax, unwind, and connect with nature. I also enjoy going to the beach with my family and friends, making memories and soaking in the sunshine. Music is a big part of my life too, I love going to concerts and discovering new artists, as it always lifts my spirits and brings people together. When I’m staying active, you can usually find me playing tennis or taking long walks with my puppy, who keeps me smiling and moving every day. These hobbies bring me balance, joy, and help me stay grounded and energized for everything I do in school and in my journey to becoming a nurse.

Volunteering

  • In addition to my academic and professional experiences, I am also actively involved in volunteer work at my church. Through various outreach programs, I’ve had the opportunity to serve my community by helping organize events, support families in need, and assist with youth and children’s ministries. Volunteering at church has taught me the importance of compassion, patience, and serving others with a selfless heart—qualities that are deeply connected to nursing. This work has strengthened my commitment to care for others, especially during vulnerable times, and has helped me grow spiritually, emotionally, and personally. It’s another way I continue to live out my calling to help and uplift those around me, which aligns closely with my goal of becoming a NICU nurse.
