Volunteer coordinator for respite events - an evening of fun for children affected by disability and their siblings staffed in a safe location staffed with a medical professional, providing the parents with a couple hours of much-needed respite. I have participated in three of these respite events. The events and day-of preparations lasted only about 4 hours. However, hours of preparation and planning were put into these events beforehand. I also assisted with the training for volunteers. During the respite event itself, I served as one-on-one support for a child affected by disability. Parents of children with disabilities cannot hire a babysitter as other parents can. Medical needs and/or behavioral challenges are two big obstacles. Respite events provide trained volunteers and are staffed with a medical professional so that parents can have a short respite.

Establishment of a disability ministry at Sunset Bible Church, and volunteer/coordinator for the ministry. Nearly every week in that time I volunteered at least 2 hrs, occasionally 4-5 hrs, with the children’s ministry. My role was typically supporting a child with disabilities so they could attend the children’s class, and occasionally I volunteered at the children’s check in desk.

My role at this camp was one-on-one support for a child a child affected by disability. This camp had the same format as the above, except I did not have a second helper. These camps are an opportunity for people affected by disability to participate in activities they are otherwise excluded from. For parents/caregivers responsible for care year-round, this provides time for them to rest, and for couples to reconnect.

My role at this camp was two-on-one support for a child affected by disability. (This child in particular needed extra support because of his level of need). I stayed overnight at this camp. Training took place on Sunday the 19th and the morning of Monday the 20th, then my second helper and I supported a child with severe autism from 8:00am to 8:30pm, minus a one-hour break, until departure late Friday morning. This provided the child’s father with a time of rest from his caregiving responsibilities.
