Driven by Faith, Excellence, and Purpose: The Journey of Clarence Atwater Jr.

My journey is defined by a desire to grow, challenge myself, and use my abilities to make a positive difference in the lives of others. I am currently a freshman at the University of Michigan–Dearborn pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering. My interest in technology comes from my curiosity about how things work and how innovation can be used to solve problems and improve the world around us. As I continue my college education, I hope to build the knowledge and skills necessary to become an engineer who creates meaningful and responsible technological solutions.

My commitment to academics began in high school at Taylor Preparatory High School, where I graduated with a 4.05 GPA while taking challenging courses, including AP Calculus and AP Research. My dedication to learning earned me AP Scholar recognition, membership in the National Honor Society, and the English Student of the Year award. These accomplishments mean more to me than simply being recognitions on my résumé. They represent the discipline, perseverance, and commitment I developed throughout my education. My AP Research experience also allowed me to explore my interest in technology by studying how personalized algorithms on social media platforms influence the information people consume and create. This experience strengthened my critical-thinking skills and encouraged me to think more deeply about the responsibility that comes with technological advancement.

My Christian faith is another important part of who I am and how I approach my goals. It has taught me to value humility, integrity, compassion, and service. I believe that becoming successful is not only about achieving personal goals but also about becoming someone who can positively influence others. My experiences volunteering at HealthQuest Physical Therapy and participating in the Westland Public Library’s Teen Advisory Board allowed me to contribute to my community while developing responsibility, communication, and leadership skills. These experiences taught me that even small contributions can make a meaningful difference when people are willing to give their time and abilities to help others.

As I continue my journey at the University of Michigan–Dearborn, I want to challenge myself academically while continuing to grow as a leader, peer, and person. I hope to be someone who encourages others to pursue their goals, remain committed through challenges, and believe in their ability to succeed. My ultimate goal is to combine my passion for computer engineering with my values and desire to serve others. I want my accomplishments to represent more than what I have achieved for myself; I want them to reflect the positive example I can set for those around me and the difference I can make in my community and future profession.
