Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Are honors college programs worth it?

An honors college can be worth it when its teaching, mentoring, community, or research experience fits your goals and justifies the added requirements. Its value depends on the specific program and your realistic alternatives.

Compare an ordinary semester, not just a brochure

Ask how the required courses would fit your major, employment, commuting, and other commitments. A small seminar may be valuable if you want sustained discussion; an extra project may be less useful if it delays a required clinical sequence or creates an unmanageable schedule.

Check whether scholarships, housing choices, or priority registration are actually included and what conditions apply. Some advantages may also be available outside honors. Compare the net cost and the academic experience rather than assuming a prestigious label guarantees better admissions or employment outcomes.

Put the answer into practice

  • Identify two benefits you would actually use.
  • Map the added coursework and project requirements.
  • Compare costs and scholarship renewal terms.
  • Ask current students about workload and advising access.

Use the honors college decision guide to make a conditional choice: “This fits if these courses count toward my degree and the workload is sustainable.” Confirm those conditions before committing.
