Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you edit your college essay?
Edit your college essay first for its answer to the prompt, then for structure, specificity, voice, and mechanics. Correct grammar cannot rescue an essay that does not communicate a clear personal insight.
Revise meaning before sentences and punctuation
Read each paragraph and note what it contributes. Remove repeated points, unnecessary background, and language that overstates your experience. Check whether the draft explains your actions and reflection rather than only retelling events.
Ask a trusted reader for focused feedback: “Where were you confused?” and “What did you learn about me?” Retain authorship when using feedback. If AI assistance is permitted, use it within the college’s rules and verify that revisions preserve your meaning; permission to proofread does not automatically permit generating substantive content.
Your next steps
- Compare the draft with every part of the prompt.
- Read aloud to catch unnatural phrasing and missing transitions.
- Check names, facts, word count, and the final application preview.
