Honor Society® Expert FAQ
What are responsible ways to use AI for college essays?
Responsible AI use begins with the college’s rules. Where allowed, limited brainstorming questions or proofreading feedback may help you revise, but your experience, reasoning, and substantive writing must remain your own.
Check permission before using writing assistance
Instead of asking for a finished essay, you might ask for questions that help you reflect on notes you wrote yourself. Do not upload sensitive personal records or other people’s private information. Check whether the school permits even this form of assistance; policies differ.
An example of a bounded request is: “Ask me questions about what I learned from this experience. Do not draft sentences for my essay.” If the policy prohibits AI help, use a counselor or permitted human feedback instead. Keep the process transparent and review every suggested change for accuracy and voice.
Your next steps
- Check the exact college and platform policy.
- Use your own factual notes and protect private information.
- Retain drafts and follow any disclosure requirement.
