Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How does financial aid work?

Financial aid usually moves through application, eligibility review, an aid offer, acceptance, and payment. Your school determines the package and disbursement schedule for the aid it administers.

What to know before you act

For U.S. federal aid, begin with the correct FAFSA award year. Complete any additional state or college forms, respond to documentation requests, and review the school’s actual offer. A processed FAFSA is not an admission decision or a final bill.

Before accepting, separate grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study. You can generally accept less loan money than offered. Check renewal rules and the timing of funds against tuition, housing, and book expenses so an apparent annual funding match does not hide a short-term cash gap.

Your next steps

  • Complete required applications before the earliest relevant deadline.
  • Resolve missing documents in the college portal.
  • Compare the final offer with the student-account bill and payment calendar.

For the next step, use the fafsa preparation guide. Organize documents, contributor steps, award years, and follow-up tasks.
