Honor Society® Expert FAQ
What GPA do you need for the dean's list?
There is no universal GPA requirement for the dean’s list. Your college or academic division sets the threshold and decides which courses and grades count. Use its current policy rather than a GPA cutoff quoted for another school.
Read the GPA rule with the credit rule
Check whether the policy uses term GPA or cumulative GPA, how many graded credits are required, and whether any grade disqualifies a student. Pass/fail courses, repeated courses, transfer credits, and incomplete grades may receive special treatment.
A displayed GPA can also be rounded for presentation. That does not establish how the school evaluates an honors threshold. Ask which precision and calculation method it uses before assuming a number just below the cutoff will be treated as meeting it.
Put the answer into practice
- Identify the policy for your degree division and term.
- Write down the GPA threshold and eligible-credit minimum.
- Check exclusions and the treatment of unresolved grades.
- Ask the registrar about any detail the policy leaves unclear.
Use a short inquiry: “Which GPA and graded-credit requirements apply to my dean’s list eligibility this term?” The GPA precision guide explains why display rounding and eligibility can differ.
