Honor Society® Expert FAQ
Do scholarships count as academic awards?
A scholarship can count as an academic award when it recognizes academic achievement, but not every scholarship does. Some are based on financial need, service, leadership, location, or other criteria. The selection basis and application instructions determine the best placement.
Describe what the scholarship actually recognizes
Read the award letter or provider’s criteria. An academic merit scholarship may fit an honors section. A need-based award should not be relabeled as academic excellence. A service scholarship may be relevant elsewhere or in an awards section that permits broader recognition.
Receiving an award is also different from applying, being nominated, or becoming a finalist. Use the exact status. If an offer has conditions, do not imply you completed them or received funds before that is true.
Put the answer into practice
- Identify the scholarship’s actual selection criteria.
- Confirm your award status and date.
- Check whether the form asks specifically for academic honors.
- Use a brief factual description when the name is ambiguous.
For example, “[Scholarship name], awarded for [verified criterion]” is clearer than an invented prestige label. The résumé awards guide can help you place the recognition appropriately.
