Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How can student athletes find scholarships?

Student athletes can search both athletics-related funding and scholarships based on academics, service, leadership, or other criteria. Athletic aid depends on the institution, sport, and governing rules; participation on a team does not automatically include a scholarship.

Check the current rules for each school

Ask the athletics and financial aid offices about eligibility, available aid, recruitment steps, and the written terms of an offer. NCAA Division III schools do not offer athletics scholarships, although other forms of aid may be available. Rules and award practices differ across systems.

A recruiting conversation is not a substitute for a written offer. Check what expenses are covered, how long funding lasts, and what happens if enrollment, team participation, or academic circumstances change. Do not assume every athletics award is a full ride.

Put the answer into practice

  • Research both academic fit and athletics participation.
  • Confirm governing-body and institutional eligibility requirements.
  • Request the actual award terms in writing.
  • Apply for relevant nonathletic scholarships too.

Use the funding comparison guide to assess the remaining cost. In applications, describe your contribution, discipline, and learning with evidence rather than treating a team position as proof of funding.
