Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How do you appeal a financial aid offer?

Ask your college for a financial-aid review when the offer appears to use incorrect information or no longer reflects your circumstances. The school’s process and available funding determine what it can change.

What to know before you act

Common reasons for review include income loss, substantial unusual expenses, or other documented changes. A merit-scholarship reconsideration may use a different process from a need-based special-circumstances review. Explain which issue you are asking the school to address.

Use a concise request with dates, supporting records, and the financial impact. Do not alter FAFSA tax-year information on your own simply to show newer income; ask the aid office how to proceed. Keep a workable alternative plan while the request is reviewed.

Your next steps

  • Request the correct appeal form and deadline.
  • Document the change and its effect on available funds.
  • Ask for a revised written offer if an adjustment is approved.

For the next step, use the compare financial aid offers. Use a worked example and worksheet to compare net price, loans, and renewal conditions.
