Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How many colleges should you apply to?

Apply to enough colleges to preserve realistic choices, but not so many that essays, costs, and deadlines overwhelm your ability to submit strong applications. There is no universally correct number.

Choose a number that lets you apply carefully

Begin with a balanced list rather than a target count. Include affordable schools with plausible admission prospects, then add other colleges only when they offer something you value. Several extremely selective schools do not become a safe plan merely because you apply to all of them.

Estimate the work for each application, including supplements, portfolios, recommendations, and separate scholarship forms. A well-researched smaller list may serve you better than a larger list of schools you would not attend. Fee waivers can reduce application costs, but they do not remove the time needed to research and complete each file.

Your next steps

  • Keep only schools with a clear academic and financial reason.
  • Estimate application workload before adding another college.
  • Review balance and affordability with a counselor or trusted adviser.
