Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How do you write a college application essay?
A strong college application essay uses a specific experience to reveal how you think, act, or grow. Answer the prompt in your own voice and add something the rest of the application does not already show.
Build the essay around experience and reflection
Start with notes about a moment, decision, or sustained interest. Explain the context briefly, then develop your actions and reflection. A dramatic hardship is not required, and an ordinary experience can be revealing when the details are thoughtful.
Use Honor Society’s Common App essay guide to plan a focused draft. After writing, ask a reader what they learned about you and where the meaning became unclear. Feedback should help you revise your own work; another person or AI should not become the substantive author of your essay.
Your next steps
- Choose a prompt and one experience that answers it.
- Draft before polishing the opening sentence.
- Revise for specific detail, reflection, and your own voice.
